Goodbye TikTok, hello Substack.
Totally didn’t believe it was really gonna happen but (as we all know) TikTok went dark for all US users last night.
I spent the last couple years working on building an audience on the app. Sharing outfits and tips for getting dressed. Then last fall, after feeling overwhelmed by videos telling me I need to buy things, I shared a 15 second clip of me speaking to the camera saying you need to buy the latest trend to be happy, what you have is good enough.
The video got 500k views and I gained thousands of followers.
So I kept posting similar videos… and each one racked up more views. I couldn’t keep up with the comments. Some were negative (“who are you to tell me what to buy!?”) but most were so positive.
Turns out I wasn’t the only person feeling overwhelmed by the “buy this now” message we see over and over again.
I thought with TikTok gone (for now) I might try to reinvigorate my Substack which I’ve been ignoring for the past year and being that message over here.
Would it resonate with you here?
It doesn’t seem like you can embed video into posts but you can share “notes” with videos…? I’m still kinda figuring this out.
And TBH I also kinda love the idea of longer form written content around consumption, more thoughtful shopping and how to be content with what we already own.
Let me know what you.

I’d love to read more from you here! Is TT still dark for you? It is up for me…
